Expenses

Due to the revelations about the misuse of MPs' allowances I have decided to take the step of publishing my claims between March 2004 and March 2008 on my own website before they are published by the House of Commons authorities.

I am the first MP in this area to have published this information. I have done so in order that local people can see for themselves what I have claimed for.

I have published details of claims for my Additional Costs Allowance (commonly referred to as the 'second homes allowance'), my Incidental Expenses Provision (the allowance which covers the costs of my two constituency offices in Dumfries and Stranraer), and claims from all allowances for the current financial year. I rent a flat in London as I think it is wrong for MPs to profit from homes bought at the taxpayers' expense. When I cease to be an MP I will hand over the keys to my flat and will have gained nothing from my London accommodation arrangements.

Some information in my expense claims has been blacked out or deleted (by the House of Commons authorities, not by me). This information relates to sensitive personal information such as credit card/debit card numbers, addresses and telephone numbers, or names of staff members or companies. This is necessary in order to safeguard the privacy of others and to fulfil my obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998.

I feel confident that, as well as not breaking any rules, I have acted in an ethical and responsible manner. I hope that by taking the step of publishing my claims this will begin to restore public confidence in Parliament.
